Rolling Through the Playoffs: The Rise of the Blade Gang

In a city that already prides itself on a passionate sports culture, something new –and loud- has taken over the streets of Buffalo. A group known as the “Blade Gang” has emerged and if you’ve been anywhere near KeyBank Center during the playoffs, you’ve seen them.

The Blade Gang isn’t an official fan club. There is no corporate sponsorships, no branding strategy, just a group of die-hard Buffalo Sabres fans who decided to show their support in the most Buffalo way you could think; strapping on rollerblades, throwing on hockey gear, and turning each playoff game into a street-level wonder.

The group, made up of young fans from South Buffalo, did not set out to become viral sensations. What set out as casual fans showing up in hockey gear rather than the typical fan apparel, became a movement, turning heads and building hyped before games at KeyBank Center.

What separates the Blade Gang from your typical fan is their commitment. They don’t just attend games – they create an atmosphere. Skating through Buffalo traffic, getting the crowd going, and chanting, they’ve turned downtown into a pregame experience. Their now-famous ritual of tackling a dummy dressed in Boston Bruins’ gear has only added to their story. Going viral on social media and capturing the attention of the entire hockey world.

But their dedication doesn’t stop when the Sabres hit the road.

When the Sabres traveled for games 3 and 4 against the Boston Bruins, the Blade Gang packed up and headed to Boston right behind. They did not even need tickets – they just needed to be there. Rolling through the streets outside TD Garden in full gear, they brought

the Buffalo energy into enemy territory.

What could have been seen as intimidating has instead become a statement. The Blade Gang rolled their way through Boston with confidence. Interacting with fans, filming content, and proving their loyalty ran deep. Their presence turned heads and even caught the attention of hockey personalities, including Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff.

Then came the moment that officially cemented the Gang.

After going viral and capturing the full spirit of playoff hockey in Buffalo, the Sabres organization rewarded the Blade Gang in a very special way, an invitation to take part in one of the team’s biggest traditions. Before Game 5, the Blade Gang was invited into the arena and were given the honor of banging the “Let’s Go Buffalo” drum, following up legends in the

city of Buffalo in the two previous home games - Sandra Jeanneret, wife of the late Rick Jeanneret, and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

It was more than just a cool moment, it was validation. What started as a group of friends messing around turned into a symbol for Buffalo playoff culture. From the streets to center stage, the Blade Gang has arrived.

In just a short time, they have become a staple of the Sabres’ ongoing playoff run. Fans now expect to see them skating, chanting, and bringing the energy before every game their passion has become a part of this postseason.

At its core, the Blade Gang represents everything Buffalo sports stands for. Loyalty, toughness, and going all in. whether they’re rolling through downtown or taking over rival cities, they have proven one thing – this isn’t just a fandom, it’s a movement
